How to wash a comforter without lumps or a musty smell

Pick a washer twice the size you think, use half the detergent and dry it low with two clean tennis balls. The full method, step by step.

Comforters are the number one reason people walk into a laundromat, and most of them come out lumpy because the washer was too small.

Pick the right drum

A queen comforter needs our 40 lb washer and a king needs the 60 lb. If the comforter fills more than two thirds of the drum, go one size up.

Less soap than you think

Use about half a scoop. Extra detergent stays in the filling and is what makes a comforter smell stale after a week.

Dry low and long

Use the 50 lb dryer on low heat with two clean tennis balls or wool dryer balls. Stop every 20 minutes and shake it out so the filling spreads evenly.
